It seems that the capital cannot get enough of Japanese food; sushi and sakes have become a hot favourite and ramen the new ‘it’ thing. Given the rise in demand and popularity, it is increasingly becoming difficult for restaurants to bring something new to the table too. Are the restaurants in town living up to the expectations? Well, some truly are, and they also have some new ones following the suite. Yokoso, a newly-launched contemporary Japanese restaurant at The Lodhi, is giving us plenty of reasons to smile and indulge. Chef Shubham Thakur plays with traditional elements without compromising on the authenticity of taste. The imaginative menu showcases the finest Japanese ingredients and locally grown produce. We savoured a bunch of the modern culinary renditions of Japanese classics and here’s what we thought about them.

We started with the Shira Ae, a salad made with pressed tofu, cucumber, beetroot and sesame sauce. The in-house sesame sauce has a rich, nutty texture and a dominant trace of peanuts. Next was the yellowtail carpaccio or the Hamachi Usuzikiri, paper thin slices of yellowtail fish served with a hint of citric soya and chives makes for a delectable treat. We also tried the rock shrimp tempura. Prawns tossed in wasabi and mayonnaise finished off with rice crispies, both the sauces are in-house and have a tempting after-taste. You may find the tofu miso soup to be a little salty, but it is soothing nonetheless.

The warm eel roll is again a progressive take on sushi. The boxed-shape sushi with warm eel fish grilled with sweet soya sauce on traditional Japanese charcoal is a must-try. For mains, we tried the pork kakuni, the slow-cooked braised pork belly is so tender and delicately done, you would not want to miss this.
